Whatever did happen to the notorious Doctor Sphinx?

The fate of Doctor Sphinx, as one reader astutely summised, was actually a combination of execution by the Grandmama la Guillotine herself, a magnificent escape followed by the leading a life of creating chaos elsewhere and everywhere, and a plunge into a deep depression and deciding that the modern world was no place for such illuminated beliefs as Doctor Sphinx had cared to share, and a setting up of camp in some far flung island.
I myself was witness to the execution. They had the poor-but-good Doctor's head securely fastened in the stocks, the drums were ominously beating, the blade was lifted... The corrupt moderators, including Mollie1, Hammas_Lover, and I think someone called Grubcat were dancing around Grandmama la Guillotine triumphantly. Poor Doctor Sphinx was wearing his ceremonial robe of Dismay and Displeasure at Denied Justice... It had never fitted him well, but more noticeably on this day, as the good doctor had insisted on utilising the entirety of the robe, so that even his eyes were shrouded in its hood.
As the blade fell, the robe seen to momentarily deflate, as if it no longer contained any substance. The executioner - I believe it was Hammas_Lover, lifted up what had been severed, but it flapped bloodlessly in the breeze. The good doctor - neither head nor body, was nowhere to be seen, and Hammas_Lover looked on perplexedly, first at the severed, black hood he held in his hand, then at the rest of the doctor's damaged garment.
Doctor Sphinx - I don't have the full story - had somehow escaped at the very last second, and later relayed to me that he had decided to return to his roots, and set up camp on what he described as a "God-forsaken island". As the modern world would not accept what he claimed were "the clearly superior beliefs of the ancients", he was setting out to work on some nefarious plot of global proportions.
"They have banned me from the forum", he described passionately, "I will put them under house-arrest - the forum will be the only place they have left to meet!" "I will devise an illness that inspires the same fear as the Black Death, but without being black, or even deathly! Which is the irony... If these people only had the wisdom of the ancients, they would have realised..." The doctor did say some more things, but I was running late for an appointment, so had to leave him mid-speech.
